The Abolitionist: Issue 16

The Abolitionist: Issue 16

Dear Friend,

COK has been working as relentlessly as ever, both by mainstreaming the everyday practice of compassion for animals and by exposing the cruelties farmed animals endure.

I’m very pleased to let you know about one of our latest projects. In a landmark investigation, COK gathered video and photographic evidence of the week-by-week lives of “broiler” chickens, who make up more than eight out of the ten billion land animals slaughtered for food each year in the United States. With virtually no legal protection whatsoever, these animals live in misery and die in agony after an industry average of only 45 days.

Our newest documentary film, 45 Days: The Life and Death of a Broiler Chicken, covers every step of the process: from hatching to packaging. The reality of these animals’ suffering is exposed, and we’re each empowered to take a stand against the abuses they—and other farmed animals—endure.

COK’s work to help animals in agribusiness goes far beyond our critical investigations. Our “Cool to Be Veg” print advertisements have been wildly successful in encouraging young people to enjoy vegetarian eating as a direct way to help animals, and our work to help egg-laying hens has shifted to an even higher gear. COK’s outreach efforts—whether they be regular tours of our FaunaVision mobile theatre, library displays, college campus leafleting, mailings of tens of thousands of our free vegetarian literature to those requesting copies, or working with restaurants to add more and more animal-friendly options—have all contributed to our pragmatic yet tireless efforts to help animals unfortunate enough to be considered “food.”

Animals on factory farms have only the voices and actions of dedicated advocates like you to bring about an end to their hidden suffering. Please join us in doing everything you can to end it.

For the animals,
Miyun Park
