The Abolitionist: Issue 15

Dear Friend,

On September 8, 2003, The Washington Post Style section’s feature story was on COK’s work. The article not only covered our many advocacy campaigns—including feed-ins, investigations, and FaunaVision tours—it graphically depicted the horrors factory-farmed animals endure. The feature then ran in The Chicago Tribune, The Louisville Courier-Journal, and other papers.

While the European Union bans or phases out gestation crates for mother pigs, veal crates for male calves, and battery cages for laying hens, these cruel practices are still standard within U.S. animal agribusiness. These sensitive beings, who cry out in pain and suffer just like dogs and cats, are denied nearly any protection against inhumane treatment.

In a move that would make George Orwell spin in his grave, the U.S. egg industry has launched its “Animal Care Certified” program and wants the public to believe that giving hens less space than the size of this magazine is “humane.” What is illegal throughout Europe because of its inherent cruelty is now labeled “Animal Care Certified” in the United States.

As you’ll read in this issue, COK is exposing this deception through our investigative work as well as through petitions to federal agencies and state regulatory divisions. When consumers see how desperate the egg industry is to veil its routine animal abuse in the cloak of animal welfare, we know they’ll leave eggs off their grocery lists for good.

The animals need us more than we could ever imagine. And there’s no better time to get active for animals than now, and there’s no person more important to be active than you.

For the animals,
Miyun Park
