COK Launches Our
First Vegan Ad Campaign!

On the Air • COK's TV Ad

From May 27 through June 7, 2002, COK's first-ever TV ad appeared on Washington, D.C.'s CBS affiliate (WUSA channel 9) between 5:45 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. each weeknight for two weeks.

The ad features a dog who is destined to be tortured, mutilated, confined, and killed. When the viewer is assured that he'll be spared these gruesome cruelties, video footage of factory-farmed animals appear as the voiceover explains that this actually is their horrible fate. The viewers are asked why we oppose such treatment of dogs, but allow it to happen to countless other animals. Finally, the ad urges viewers to learn how they can take a stand against animal cruelty by visiting TryVegan.com.

This may be the first time in the United States that an explicitly pro-vegan ad showing factory-farmed animals has appeared on a major network affiliate during such a high-viewership time slot. During the two weeks the ad ran, hundreds of thousands of viewers learned about cruelty to farmed animals, and more than 500 ordered COK's free Vegan Starter Guide!

On the Streets • COK's Bus Ad

While some people automatically think of crime and D.C. as going hand-in-hand, what many people don't realize is that D.C. residents have more to fear from the foods we eat than we do from violent criminals.

In response, COK placed 380 bus ads in May and June 2002, showing thousands of D.C. bus riders the link between animal-based diets and dangerous health effects. Hundreds of individuals ordered the advertised free Vegan Starter Guides to learn more about adopting veganism.

Numerous studies have shown that diets high in animal products significantly contribute to heart disease (the nation's top killer), and other studies have shown that veganism offers significant health benefits, protection from heart disease being just one of many.

So, for those of us who want to stay safe, perhaps substituting a veggie burger for the pepper spray may be the best thing we can do for ourselves.
