Rescued!
Last fall, two COK activists learned of a guinea fowl living by Riverside Park in New York City. He had managed to escape ritualistic slaughter in a Santeria ceremony, and was eeking out an existence in upper-Manhattan. The bird had been seen searching for food dangerously close to the high-speed roadway of West Side Highway, and with winter fast approaching, the animal's safety and well-being was of great concern.
So, a rescue attempt was mounted, and, over several days, activists tried to capture the beautiful guinea fowl. His incredible speed and flying ability made the endeavor very difficult. As well, the fear of scaring him into heavy traffic on the adjacent highway added another obstacle. But, the patience and relentlessness of the activists finally paid off, and the guinea fowl was captured.
He now lives in peace and safety at an upstate New York bird sanctuary, where he no longer can fall victim to speeding cars, inclement weather, or human-inflicted cruelties.
