U.S. Statistics for “Food Animals” Slaughtered in 2003
Note: These numbers do not include aquatic animals, for whom there is no
official count. As well, the statistics do not include animals who died either
on the farm or in transit, who number more than 100 million animals per year.
Commercial Slaughter Statistics
- Chickens: 8.68 billion (down less than 1 percent from 2002)
- Turkeys: 267 million (down less than 1 percent from 2002)
- Ducks: 24.3 million (up 1 percent from 2002)
- Cattle: 35.5 million (down 1 percent from 2002)
- Calves: 1 million (down 4 percent from 2002)
- Pigs: 101 million (up 1 percent from 2002)
- Sheep and Lambs: 2.98 million (down 9 percent from 2002)
Total Number of Animals Slaughtered for Food: 9.1 billion
