Where Does Neiman Marcus Stand on Fur?
While Neiman Marcus likes to tout itself as one of the nation's most respectable department stores, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, Neiman Marcus knowingly contributes to the suffering and death of millions of animals every year. By continuing to sell fur products while thousands of other retailers choose not to, Neiman Marcus supports a morally bankrupt and inherently violent industry.
Farmed

|
The intense confinement and boredom on fur farms often drive animals to insanity. |
Neiman Marcus might like us to believe that it is more humane to "farm" animals for their fur, rather than catch them in the wild. However, there are no laws ensuring humane care of animals on fur farms in the U.S.
Fur farmers confine animals to tiny cages where almost every natural instinct is frustrated. With nothing else to do, animals are driven to insanity and resort to stereotypic behaviors such as nervous pacing and self-mutilation. Killing methods on fur farms range anywhere from gassing and neck-breaking to crushing and anal electrocution.

Animals imprisoned in cages, like these mink, are denied any semblance of a natural life. |
Needless to say, there is nothing "humane" about intensively confining animals, driving them insane through boredom and psychological torture, then murdering them utilizing excruciating methods. These gruesome lives and deaths are an unfortunate reality for tens of millions of fur-bearing animals globally every year.
Trapped
As raising animals for their fur involves a lifetime of torture and a death most would consider appalling, maybe Neiman Marcus would claim it is more humane to trap animals in the wild because at least they will have had a taste of freedom before losing their lives to human vanity. The facts speak a little differently, however.

A skinned fox—the victim of human vanity. |
Animals caught in the wild can suffer in leghold traps for days before the trapper arrives to club or crush the victim to death. With no food, water, or protection from predators, victims of the leghold trap will sometimes gnaw their own leg off to free themselves, only to die of exposure or blood loss. As traps are completely arbitrary, trappers maim and kill hundreds of thousands of dogs, cats, eagles, and other "non-target" animals yearly. These animals are considered "trash" by the industry and are treated accordingly.
Why Neiman Marcus?
 |
|
Animals caught in leghold traps often gnaw off their own limbs in attempts to free themselves. |
While many stores have recognized the inherent cruelty of the fur industry and stopped selling fur, Neiman Marcus continues to operate 27 fur departments in the U.S. Because of its image as a trendsetter in the fashion world, were Neimans to become fur-free, a crippling blow will have been dealt to the fur industry.
The effort it would take for Neimans to stop selling this one product out of the thousands it offers would be minimal. However, the lives it would save would be countless.
Please let Neiman Marcus know how you feel about its support for animal cruelty. As a trend-setter in the fashion world, Neimans has an obligation to maintain a decent standard of business ethics, which at the very least includes not selling fur. Click here for Neimans' contact info.
