Male Chicks
Male chicks do not lay eggs and, because they are of a different breed than
"broiler" chickens raised for meat, have no economic value to the
egg industry. They are likewise considered an unwanted by-product of egg production
and are killed shortly after birth. In 1998, 219 million chicks were killed
by the commercial egg industry.(60) They are
typically ground up alive, gassed, or thrown into a dumpster to suffocate or
dehydrate.(61, 62)
