Local nonprofit praises decision to offer healthier and more compassionate foods
January 7, 2008
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) announced that, starting this month, students can choose from a variety of vegetarian options when eating in school cafeterias.
According to the January 2008 MCPS newsletter, Quick Notes, the new meatless menu items include a veggie burger, soy chicken nuggets and soy milk. The newsletter also suggests that parents should "Encourage your child to try these protein-packed alternatives to traditional favorites."
Compassion Over Killing, a Montgomery County-based nonprofit animal protection charity, applauds MCPS's decision to dish out more vegetarian meals.
"It's wonderful that the Montgomery County Public School system is expanding its menu to include more vegetarian choices, giving students the opportunity to choose healthier and more compassionate foods in the cafeteria," said Erica Meier, executive director of Compassion Over Killing.
Polls suggest that a growing number of teens and young adults throughout the United States are opting to leave meat off their plates—for their health, the planet, and animals. By serving nutritious vegetarian meals, Montgomery County Public Schools are taking an important step in paving the way for a better future for today's youth.
