The United Egg Producers has agreed to retire the logo and name of a seal program they had been using on egg cartons nationwide because the Federal Trade Commission found it misleading, says the FTC's Mamie Kresses. The producers will swap the words “Animal Care Certified” for “United Egg Producers Certified,” followed by the tagline: “Produced in Compliance with United Egg Producers Animal Husbandry Guidelines.” The animal rights group Compassion Over Killing had complained to the Better Business Bureau and the FTC that the name “misled consumers concerned about animal cruelty.” But Jeff Armstrong, chairman of the egg producers' scientific advisory panel, called the program one of the food industry's “most proactive and progressive animal welfare programs.”
