Action Alert: Urge Trader Joe's To Go Cage-Free!
Campaign Victory!
After several months of campaigning led by the Humane Society of the United
States (HSUS), Trader Joe's announced in November 2005 the adoption a cage-free
policy for its store brand eggs. According to The HSUS, this decision is expected
to have a positive impact on the lives of an estimated 380,000 laying hens who
provide the more than 100 million Trader Joe's brand eggs sold each year. Learn
more about this campaign victory.
Birds
who are intensively confined in battery cages suffer from a number of debilitating
welfare problems, including the inability to perform many natural behaviors
(such as nesting, roosting, and preening), feather-loss, bone weakness, and
various injuries or diseases that go untreated. Nearly 300 million egg-laying
in the U.S. are forced to live in such misery.
Tragically, this cruel and archaic battery-cage system currently dominates
the U.S. egg industry, but a number of universities, grocery store chains, and
food service providers are taking a stand against it by adopting cage-free egg
policies. Learn
