In July 2006, Compassion Over Killing launched our first-ever National Veggie Hot Dog Day to coincide with the industry-declared National Hot Dog Day. Since then, because this event has been so popular, we've expanded it into a month-long celebration! So for the fifth year in a row, activists from coast to coast took part in speaking out for farmed animals by distributing literature and sharing delicious animal-friendly fare with friends, family, and other hungry vegetarians-to-be.
Thanks to the dedication and creativity of dozens of animal advocates around the country, the 2010 National Veggie Hot Dog Month celebrations included dozens of events—from feed-ins and leafletings on busy street corners to neighborhood BBQ’s and even a veg-friendly event at an animal sanctuary in Acton, CA!
All together, these events helped inform thousands of people about the miseries endured by animals raised for food as well as how easy and fun it is to choose a more compassionate diet!
Thanks to the generosity of Lightlife Foods, over 500 free veggie hot dogs were given away to vegetarians-to-be from coast to coast throughout the month.
In addition to individual activism, COK was thrilled that two Washington, D.C.-area restaurants participated in the 2010 National Veggie Hot Dog Month:
Café Green in Washington, DC joined in the celebration by offering a “half smokes” and beer brats as a National Veggie Hot Dog Month special!
Great Sage in Clarksville, Md, hosted “Sausage” Saturday, a benefit for COK where they served up three different types of veggie dogs with a variety of toppings.
Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers — your help ensured the success of 2010's National Veggie Hot Dog Month!
“One volunteer, Danielle, was shouting out to people ‘save the animals, save the planet, be a super hero’ and that seemed to get the attention of the people dressed up like super heroes around us.”
