2009 National Veggie Hot Dog Month a Huge Success!

COK’s feed-in in downtown, D.C.

In July 2006, Compassion Over Killing launched our first-ever National Veggie Hot Dog Day to coincide with the industry-declared National Hot Dog Day. Since then, because this event has been so popular, we've expanded it into a month-long celebration! So for the fourth year in a row, activists from coast to coast took part in speaking out for farmed animals by distributing literature and sharing delicious animal-friendly fare with friends, family, and other hungry vegetarians-to-be.

During July 2009, dozens of volunteers in more than 25 different cities hosted over 30 outreach events—from public feed-ins and backyard veggie barbeques to leafleting and workplace food giveaways!

Thank you to everyone who organized an event, and thank you to all the passersby who slowed down, took a leaflet, and perhaps for the first time sampled animal-friendly fare.

We also want to express our appreciation to Lightlife Foods. Hundreds of free veggie hot dogs were given away to vegetarians-to-be from coast to coast throughout the month thanks to Lightlife's generosity.

In addition to individual activism, COK was thrilled that three Washington, D.C.-area restaurants participated in the 2009 National Veggie Hot Dog Month:

Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers — your help ensured the success of 2009's National Veggie Hot Dog Month!

"Eight of our vegan friends joined to participate in a vegan feed-in. We were caught by surprise by two vegan employees from one environmentally friendly shop in Water Tower Place mall. They were very happy to realize what we were doing and came out to cheer, hug and greet us, and they even gave us some environment-friendly souvenirs. Isn't that cool?"

"The girl [on the right] is my daughter; she really loves her veggie dogs! She is so cute and very willing to share the news on animal rights!"

- Valerie in Yerington, NV

COK hosted two National Veggie Hotdog Month feed-ins: on July 13 outside the Verizon Center and on July 28, before the Jonas Brothers Concert in downtown D.C.

"We served Yves Veggie Hotdogs cooked in vegetarian baked beans (Beanie Weenies) and also Tofurky Italian Sausages sauteed with bell peppers and onions.  The public loved them and some people were shocked to find out veggie dogs could taste so good--repeating "wow...wow!"  or "these are REALLY good!"

- Barbara in Boulder, CO

In Akron, Ohio volunteers set up a veggie hot dog stand and happily fed hungry passersby, all the while passing out Eating Sustainably and Pig Industry Flyers.

"Today's veggie dog giveaway went great. We had 7 volunteers who handed out 400 veggie dogs in about 45 minutes. We gave out 400 pieces of literature, including Vegetarian Starter Guides to a very receptive crowd!"

- Kristie in San Francisco, CA

"We handed out over 100 veggie dogs, along with a lot of literature — all of which were happily received. And everyone enjoyed the veggie dogs very much, even people who seemed surprised that they liked a hot dog that didn't contain meat."
