2008 National Veggie Hot Dog Month a Huge Success!
COK’s feed-in in downtown, D.C.
In 2006, COK launched our first ever National Veggie Hot Dog Day to coincide with the industry-declared National Hot Dog Day. These compassionate celebrations have been so popular that this year, we decided to expand it into a month-long event, making this July National Veggie Hot Dog Month!
Thanks to dedication and creativity of dozens of animal advocates around the country, the 2008 National Veggie Hot Dog Month celebrations included more than 30 events—from feed-ins and leafleting on busy street corners to office cook-ins and D.C.’s first ever Veggie Hot Dog Eating Contest.
All together, these events helped inform thousands of people about the miseries endured by animals raised for food as well as how easy and fun it is to choose a more compassionate diet!
Thanks to the generosity of Lightlife Foods and Tofurky, hundreds of free veggie hot dogs were given away to vegetarians-to-be from coast to coast throughout the month.
Great Sage in Clarksville, Maryland, also joined in the celebration by serving up a National Veggie Hot Dog Month special for four nights: veggie hot dogs with a variety of toppings!
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to organize and participate in these events. Your help ensured the success of the 2008 National Veggie Hot Dog Month!
“We handed out about 65 veggie dogs on Saturday in front of the Tampa Convention Center. EVERYONE said “tastes the same,” “no difference,” “yum,” or “can I have another one?” Thanks for all the great info on your website, which was very helpful in figuring out how to do this. We can’t wait to do it again!”

“Despite a little rain, it was a great night! We gave out lots of COK and other literature and probably close to 400 samples of veggie meats. People were amazed, and several people came up and said ‘This tastes just like meat, where can i get this?’”
- Barbara in Boulder, CO
“Everything went very well and the food was very well-received. We gave out over 80 veggie dogs!”
- Chelsea, Compassionate Action for Animals in Minneapolis, MN
COK, Sticky Fingers Bakery, and Tofurky teamed up to host D.C.’s first Veggie Hot Dog Eating Contest. Here’s what some contestants had to say:
“I had a blast and want to say thanks for putting this whole thing together.”
- Brian (a.k.a. “Bottomless Pit”) in Washington, D.C.
“After hanging out with loads of cool vegans at the veggie dog eating contest, and reading some of the literature [COK] gave us at the event, we've (my girlfriend and I) had our first serious discussion about going vegan.”
- Mike (a.k.a. “Binkles”) in Washington, D.C.

The BBQ went terrifically and the sentiments I heard were just what I expected.....it was almost unanimous that everyone felt that the veggie dogs (with the condiments) tasted nearly exactly the same!
