VegFest 2009: A Vegetarian Celebration in the Nation's Capital!
Sept. 12, 2009: The cool, breezy day coupled with excitement in the air set the stage for the more 2,500 visitors to the DC VegFest to meet, listen to and talk with over 60 non-profit organizations, commercial vendors, food exhibitors and dynamic speakers. The crowds descended upon the University Yard before the event officially started at noon in order to grab a free commemorative bag loaded with treats and many people stayed until after the event ended at 6pm.
From vegan outreach and nutrition to environmental awareness to dog adoptions and farmed animal sanctuaries, the non-profit organizations that participated in the DC VegFest covered every topic related to the benefits of choosing vegetarian foods. Visitors weaved their way through the issues—signing petitions, calling senators, taking free literature to spread the word—and were greeted by a variety of stores offering the goods needed to help others transition to vegetarian eating—and to stay vegetarian. Food vendors dished out delicious vegan cuisine as diverse as the crowd. Think American, Asian, Indian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and French cuisine, and more! From nutrition to cooking demos to vegan body building, the all-day speaker line-up offered visitors a chance to listen and learn—and interact with—the experts.
The DC VegFest was a huge success thanks to everyone who supported it by coming out, tabling for their favorite cause, and volunteering to help set-up, break-down and everything in between. It couldn't have happened without you!
