Anti-Fur Protest at Neiman Marcus
February 16, 2002

On February 16, 2002, 275 animal advocates united in front of the D.C. Neiman Marcus to demand that the company stop supporting the fur industry.

Neiman Marcus not only sells fur, but also aggressively tries to create a demand for the product, which most Americans find to be both cruel and socially irresponsible. As a trendsetter in the fashion world, Neiman Marcus knows that it has the power to create a demand, and does so through newspaper advertisements, in-store appearances by fur designers, and specialty fur departments in the vast majority of its stores.

As long as Neiman Marcus caters to a tiny minority of consumers not bothered by animal cruelty, animal advocates will continue to encourage the chain to go fur-free.

At the February 16th demonstration, two activists engaged in a nonviolent sit-in in front of Neimans' doors. However, two soon grew to four, which then grew to ten, and quickly grew to more than 200. Of course, there was little the police or security guards could do. The mass sit-in lasted until Neiman Marcus closed for the night, with no arrests being made.
