Tabling at the D.C. Green Festival and Takoma Park Street Festival, October 6-7, 2007

On the weekend of Oct. 6th COK, with the help of over a dozen volunteers, participated in two fantastic outreach events: The Green Festival and the Takoma Park Street Festival. Both events drew huge crowds that were very receptive to learning more about factory farming issues and vegetarian eating.

For two days at the Green Festival, attendees were asked to write a letter to the FDA showing their support for COK’s rule-making petition seeking to mandate truth in labeling on egg cartons. Letter writers as young as 10-years-old were eager to voice their concern for egg-laying hens.

The Takoma Park Street Festival was equally successful. Volunteers offered citrus “spare ribs” to passersby as we hosted our monthly vegan feed-in at the COK booth. People could hardly believe the mock meat samples were free of animal ingredients. A number of people had seen us the previous day at the Green Festival, while others were familiar with our literature through our metro leafleting.

Overall, more than 3500 copies of COK’s Vegetarian Starter Guide, Easy Vegan Recipes and Vegetarian Guide to Washington, D.C. and Surrounding Areas were distributed and 700 letters were mailed to the FDA.

Below are some photos from the weekend.

Thank you to all of the volunteers for making both events so successful!

Green Festival

People were eager to learn more about vegetarian eating and how they could help battery-caged hens.
Attendees were intrigued by the battery cage, so they stopped, signed letters, and added their voice by dropping their signed letter in the display.
A young vegan was happy to sign a letter stating that “Hens are treated with cruelty to get their eggs.”

Takoma Park Street Festival

People were amazed at how great tasting the meat-free “spare ribs” were.
A COK staffer hands a copy of the Vegetarian Guide to Washington, D.C. and Surrounding Areas after being asked how to find vegetarian restaurants in D.C.
These kids were clearly excited to get VegDC.com and TryVeg.com stickers to show their friends.
