Save animals, don't serve them

Blue Ridge Now
December 16, 2009

To The Editor: It was great to read that the Blue Ridge Humane Society’s recent luncheon raised $7,000 (“Fashion show fundraiser goes to the dogs,” Dec. 4). I applaud the efforts of these good folks for their tireless work to help local dogs and cats. But I was distressed to learn that chickens were served at the event.

The article quoted the organization’s executive director as saying, “It’s so important to remember all that are less fortunate, including the animals.” I wholeheartedly agree, and hope they will one day endorse Campaign Humane and join the growing list of animal welfare groups who have pledged to serve only vegetarian meals at their functions.

Why raise money to help some species by eating the bodies of others? All animals feel pain, and when given the choice, would choose life over death. To learn more about this program, visit the web site of Compassion over Killing, www.cok.net, and click “campaigns.” While at their web site, why not order a free Vegetarian Starter Guide? We all have the ability to say no to animal cruelty every time we sit down to eat, and this guide will show you just how easy it is to make humane food choices.
