Peter Singer's argument for a "meat tax" is compelling. Excessive meat consumption is as dangerous for human health as cigarettes. But tax dollars subsidize production of grains such as corn and soy, which are used to make high-fructose corn syrup and feed animals on factory farms. In other words, the government gives our money to people who make things that are bad for us. Eliminating these subsidies, or using tax dollars to support production of healthful foods, might make a "meat tax" unnecessary.
