Letter to the Editor

The Retriever Weekly
October 5, 2009

As one of the organizers of the DC VegFest, I really enjoyed reading Yasim Radbod's article ("Vegetarians unite under a similar cause" September 21, 2009). In addition to changing our impact on the environment, choosing vegan foods is one of the most effective steps each of us can take to alleviate animal suffering-and it's the reason I decided to stop eating animals several years ago.

More than 10 billion land animals are slaughtered for food every year in the U.S. I was horrified to learn that many of these animals are routinely subjected to practices so cruel, it would result in criminal prosecution if performed on the cats and dogs with whom we share our homes.

However, we don't have to wait for the next VegFest to start standing up for animals every time we sit down to eat. Compassion Over Killing offers a free vegetarian restaurant guide to Baltimore on VegBaltimore.com.
