Letter: Yes on Prop. 2

The Merced Sun Star
October 22,  2008

Editor: Thank you for your coverage of the debate over Proposition 2 ("Prop. 2 opponents say measure would undo the state's egg industry," Monday).

Unfortunately, Proposition 2's opponents are trying to confuse voters by claiming if Proposition 2 passes eggs will no longer be safe for consumers. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Proposition 2's opponents argue the mixing of eggs and fecal matter will be a consequence of passing Proposition 2. In reality, such contamination is a routine result of factory farming practices that go on every day across California. In the industry's battery cages, live chickens are also forced to live on top of dead chickens. That can't possibly be safe for consumers.

The same unsafe practices that Proposition 2 opponents are using to try to scare voters occur every day in factory farms across California.

There's no excuse for the abuses of the factory farming industry, and that's why I'm encouraging all my friends and family to vote yes on Proposition 2.
