Turkeys Endure Cruelty

Thank you for Rose Panieri’s “Vegetarians help save turkeys on Thanksgiving.” According to Panieri one reason, the best in my opinion, to become vegetarian is for the animals.

More than 65 million turkeys are killed during the winter holiday season alone. Sadly, turkeys raised for food endure unspeakable cruelty, including mutilation without anesthesia and intense confinement.

In addition, through selective breeding and growth-promoting drugs, they quickly grow abnormally large, leading to a number of chronic health problems.

Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to have a turkey-friendly feast. Serve up a “meaty” mushroom loaf with mashed potatoes and gravy or run to your local grocery store for a tofurky with all the fixings. Either way, everyone will be thankful, including the turkeys.
