Stand Up To Factory Farms

Thank you for the July 26 article, "Blank Park Zoo Pig Exhibit Generates Controversy." There is a legitimate reason for Iowa citizens to be concerned about a cruel and environmentally irresponsible factory-farming practice being depicted in a positive light by the Blank Park Zoo.

Most residents of Iowa have heard countless testimonials from people who have witnessed firsthand the economic and environmental devastation factory-farm facilities bring to rural areas. However, community members aren't the only ones who suffer.

The intense confinement of sows in metal cages so small the animals cannot even turn around are practices deemed so inhumane the European Union has had them banned. Florida is also phasing out the use of cruel gestation crates.

To take a stand against factory farms, concerned Iowans can decide to support family farmers who contribute to sustainable agriculture and use humane animal-husbandry practices.
