Your article about the Great American Meatout event at the senior citizens center was inspirational [“Where’s the beef? Not here!” March 22]. To hear a man who has eaten meat for 85 years say he is considering becoming vegetarian just goes to show that it is never too late for people to make a change.
The animals raised for our food experience extreme physical pain, mental anguish, and fear throughout their abbreviated lives. Most are confined in crowded, filthy cages or pens without ever touching grass or breathing fresh air. Many are fully conscious when dismembered at the slaughterhouse.
As public awareness of animal welfare grows, more and more compassionate people are replacing meat, eggs, and dairy with delicious, healthy vegetarian food. Eating meat may be an old habit for some of us, but breaking it becomes easier and more convenient each day. Eating vegetarian is a great way to help animals, and your body will thank you, too!
