Cows Need to Be Protected from Future Harm
Published in Wytheville Enterprise on April 3, 2003.
I was pleased to read that James Thompson, who allegedly allowed 54 of his cows to die from starvation, has been indicted on 63 counts of animal cruelty. Farm animals are typically excluded from anti-cruelty statutes, so a conviction in this case would be real progress in the eyes of the law. However, I am still concerned for the future welfare of the remaining cows.
The cows on this farm have already suffered enough and, if taken to market, they will only suffer more. They will be electrically prodded and may be left without food or water for days. Although cows are supposed to be rendered unconscious when slaughtered, many are fully conscious when dismembered.
Sensitive, feeling animals should never have this kind of abuse forced upon them. Why not place them in good homes or animal sanctuaries where they will be cared for properly and allowed to live out the rest of their natural lives in peace? The apparent neglect that took place on this farm is not uncommon, but we can help protect these animals simply by not eating them. Compassion starts with our very next meal.
