Going Vegan
Published in The Mount Vernon Gazette on October 3, 2002.
To the Editor:
Thank you for presenting your readers with healthy breakfast ideas in
“Breakfast Can Taste Good and Still Be Good For You,” [Gazette Dining
Dining, September 19].
In fact, a well-rounded vegan diet is a great way to lower one’s saturated
fat intake and cholesterol while simultaneously extending much- needed
compassion to the billions of animals currently suffering in factory farms.
These animals, including cows used for milk, chickens used for both eggs and
meat, and pigs, suffer severe physical and psychological torment. Depending
on their species and gender, they are castrated, debeaked, tail-docked and
ear-cropped all without painkiller. They live in squalor, without fresh air
or enough space to move about or even socialize normally.
Becoming vegan is a simple and powerful way to benefit both humans and
animals.
