Veterinary Statement on the Condition of the Rescued Hens
May 23, 2002
To Whom It May Concern,
On May 23, 2002, ten laying hens, recently acquired by Paul Shapiro, were presented for physical examination. All birds were found to be moderately to severely emaciated. Their weights ranged from 2 lbs. 12 oz. to 4lbs. 7 oz. They had pale mucous membranes, pale endematous combs, fecal scalding of their ventral bodies, muscle atrophy of their legs, and all had over grown nails.
A few birds were unable to extend their digits and two had pododermatitis. There was evidence of chronic upper respiratory infections in most birds with mucous clogged nostrils and nodular pyogranlomatous lesions around the eyes. One bird had severe
conjunctivitis and another had traumatic enucleation of her right eye. Two birds had slight to moderate acities.
Sincerely,
Paula Cameron, D.V.M.
