Vancouver To Become First Canadian City to Endorse Meatless Monday

Canada Vancouver, Canada is on track to become the first Canadian city to endorse Meatless Mondays! According to the Vancouver Food Policy Council, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is expected to sign a proclamation officially declaring June 10, 2013 as Meatless Monday. Organizers say the day will be celebrated with community events that will spread awareness about–and celebrate–the benefits of meat-free eating.

The First Burger Made from In Vitro Meat

In Vitro From Tofurky sausages to Gardein chicken to Daiya vegan cheese, plant-based meats and dairy products are quickly gaining popularity–and winning over the hearts and tastes of thousands. In fact, according to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, meat consumption nationwide has decreased 12% since 2007–and more people are searching for information on vegan eating.

Despite this progress, the majority of Americans continue to eat meat — so imagine the suffering that could be spared if this meat didn’t involve raising and then killing an actual animal? Sure, it may sound like science fiction, but growing meat from cells in a lab (referred to as in vitro meat) may be one way we can help save the lives of tens of billions of animals who are raised and killed for food each year across the globe.

Egg Industry The egg industry’s busiest time of year is the Easter season. After that, “sales go down, but the hens keep on laying eggs,” says the American Egg Board. In an effort to increase consumer demand for excess eggs, egg producers across the country celebrate May as “National Egg Month.”

No matter how you cook them, however, eggs aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. In fact, behind almost every “incredible, edible” egg sold in grocery stores today is a hen so intensively confined inside a barren wire battery cage, she can barely even move.
