The Abolitionist: Issue 14

Dear Friend,

Dr. Charles Olentine, Egg Industry magazine editor, recently wrote: “A classic example of David trying to bring down Goliath is seen with the efforts of Compassion Over Killing. … The organization may be short on staff but has effectively gotten the public’s attention. …”

Dr. Olentine is right: Compared to the powerful animal agribusiness industry, COK isn’t in the same league with our limited budget and two staff members. But, despite our seeming disadvantage, we won’t throw up our hands and give up.

In fact, while our resources may be miniscule compared with the industry’s, we are far richer. Our members and dedicated volunteer department managers donate their time, talents, and funds, enabling COK to help animals around the clock and with unrelenting energy.

In this issue of The Abolitionist, you’ll read about COK’s most recent investigation into battery cage cruelty. Our undercover documentation of horrific—yet standard—animal abuse by the egg industry made headlines around the world, opening the eyes of many consumers to the misery of modern egg production.

I’ve been inside the gigantic windowless sheds that confine hundreds of thousands of hens, and the pain and despair that are their reality haunt me to this day. I cannot begin to imagine what it must be like never to see sunlight, feel the earth beneath my feet, or freely stretch my arms and legs.

We may be small compared to the industries that abuse animals, but we’ll never give up, never give in, and never forget those ignored animals on factory farms. It’s in their memory and with your support that we continue to fight.

In the struggle,
Miyun Park
